SPOTTED: Calabaza flowers, Upper Eastside Farmers Market
Any kind of squash flower is hard to come by. Unless you're growing some type of squash in your backyard, the logistics of picking, prepping and getting these beauties for sale are pretty daunting since the shelf life of squash flowers can be counted in hours and not days. Luckily the guys at Urban Oasis raided their calabaza planting and plucked some of these bad boys. At $1 a pop or 6 for $5 it's worth your while to grab some to either saute whole (like the French), make into soup (like the Mexicans) or stuff with some mild cheese and pan fry (like the Italians). The Upper Eastside Farmers Markets goes from 9:00 to 2:00 on Saturdays so it's too late to pick some up today. But now you've got your first errand to run next Saturday.
